    The Center for Black, Brown, and Queer Studies (BBQ+) is accepting applications for a Pedagogy Summer Fellowship of $5000 to create BIPOC and/or queer studies-focused Open Educational Resources (OERs) and teaching strategies.

    From the website:

    2021 Fellows will create OER for high school and college classrooms that explore race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, socio-economic status, and colonialism. Fellows receive regular training, workshops, and opportunities for career development in a collaborative and supportive environment.

    The fellowship is intended for a cohort of grad students and early career scholars and teachers.

    The fellowship lasts from May 25th through September 1st.

    Application deadline is April 5th, 2021.

    Senior Instructional Professor (Open Rank) and Co-Director, French Language Program

    The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and the Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago are accepting applications for a Senior Instructional Professor (open rank) in French. This is a full-time position, benefits-eligible with a three-year renewable term, to start on September 1, 2021.

    The Senior Instructional Professor will serve as Co-Director of the French Language Program, and will share responsibility for managing all aspects of the French Language Program in the Department of Romance Languages & Literatures. The person selected will also teach in the French Language Program. The regular annual teaching load for senior instructional professors is six language courses in French. While serving as Language Program Co-Director this will be a reduced load of at least four courses/sections per year. Romance Languages Program Directors take turns teaching the Departmental pedagogy course.

    Required are a Superior-level proficiency in French as defined by the ACTFL, an advanced degree in French or a related discipline, and extensive teaching experience at the college or postsecondary level, along with evidence of pedagogical excellence as demonstrated by course evaluations or other forms of assessment. Specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy and/or assessment is highly desirable. Experience developing and teaching language courses, and in curricular implementation is required. Applicants need to demonstrate the ability to design and articulate curricula across multiple sections, levels, and instructional platforms, and to work effectively with faculty members.

    The Senior Instructional Professor will supervise full- and part-time instructional professors and lecturers, including those who are represented by the Service Employees International Union, with responsibility for directing, reviewing and evaluating their work, and, if necessary, for undertaking corrective action. In addition to the evaluation of teaching staff in the French language program, mandated by the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Program Co-Director may be called upon to perform evaluation duties for teaching staff in other departments.

    The Program Co-Director will share responsibility for managing all pedagogical, administrative, and financial aspects of the French language program. In this capacity, the Program Co-Director will provide pedagogical vision, oversight, and direction for the language program as a whole. This includes course content and structure, schedules and staffing, the instructional budget, searches and recommendations for appointments, exchange personnel, mentorship, assessments, program expansion and improvement, the organization of cultural and outreach activities, and regular communication with relevant faculty and staff across the University. The expansion of the UChicago Paris Center may require increased coordination with language programs and instructors there. The non-course responsibilities require effort beyond the nine months of the academic year, including summer session involvement, upcoming academic year planning and materials, and staffing.

    The Department of French and Italian Studies is inviting applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of French beginning September 1, 2021. We are seeking a teacher-scholar in Environmental Humanities with additional expertise in one of the following: Queer Ecology, Animal Studies, Environmental Justice, or Indigenous Studies. PhD expected. The successful candidate will be part of an energetic department committed to providing the best education to talented undergraduates. We are particularly interested in individuals with extensive experience, demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and mentoring a diverse student body and a record of excellence in teaching. This is a tenure track position with a teaching load of 4.5, at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.

    Candidates must have a native or near-native fluency in French and English and a strong commitment to teaching all levels of the French language.

    We have just learned that Tessa Nunn, our Graduate Student Representative, expects to complete her studies in the spring of 2021 and thus will not run for re-election.  As we send our warmest congratulations to Tessa, we must now search for her replacement.

    The Graduate Student Representative brings to the attention of the Executive Committee, via the President, concerns of graduate students relative to the mission of WIF.  She/he/they publicize/s WIF and its activities to student colleagues at graduate student conferences and in social media to recruit new members.  She/he/they organize/s a bi-annual writing exchange among WIF graduate students and early career scholars.

    The Graduate Student Representative serves for two years, but may not continue beyond the year of completion of the terminal degree.  Candidates for the position of Graduate Student Representative must be sponsored by a WIF member.
